Romania Names Luca Niculescu as Prime Minister Candidate
Speaking at a news conference at Cotroceni Palace alongside Niculescu, Dan said the nominee had the strongest prospects of winning enough parliamentary backing to form a government.
“We have chosen the person who has the best chance of forming a majority,” he said.
Dan said Niculescu would be free to determine whether to establish a technocratic or political administration. He also confirmed that the decree formally approving the nomination had been submitted to the Official Gazette.
The president emphasized Romania’s goal of joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
“This is a moment when Romania must make the leap that OECD membership allows,” he said.
Niculescu accepted the nomination while acknowledging the difficulties facing the country.
“I accept this responsibility with full awareness of the difficulty of the moment,” he said.
The nomination came after Dan met earlier Monday with leaders and representatives of political parties and parliamentary groups as part of consultations on forming the next government.
