South Africa welcomes the Promotion Mission of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights
Government welcomes the delegation of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which arrives in the country on Sunday, 27 September 2026, ahead of its Promotion Mission from 28 September to 2 October 2026.
The mission is undertaken pursuant to Article 45(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which mandates the Commission to promote human and peoples’ rights and support their protection through research, country visits and constructive dialogue with States Parties.
South Africa welcomes the mission as an opportunity to deepen its engagement with African human-rights institutions and to provide information on the country’s constitutional, legislative, policy and institutional measures to promote and protect human rights.
The programme will commence with a high-level entry meeting and a ministerial plenary at OR Tambo Building on 28 September 2026. The programme includes engagements with government representatives, Parliament, institutions supporting constitutional democracy, civil society, academia, United Nations agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
Government will participate in the mission in a spirit of openness, cooperation and constructive dialogue. Departments will provide verified information in accordance with their respective mandates and South Africa’s constitutional and legal framework
South Africa recognises the independent mandate of the ACHPR. Government communication will therefore remain distinct from statements, preliminary observations or conclusions that may be issued by the Commission. Government will not anticipate the outcome of the mission and will consider any official observations or recommendations through the appropriate processes.
