Premier Lazarus Mokgosi and Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong lead Milestones of Freedom launch in North West, 22 Sept
Premier of North West province, Mr Lazarus Mokgosi and Deputy Minister in The Presidency, Mr Kenny Morolong, will on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, lead the North West provincial launch of the Milestones of Freedom campaign at Philemon Masinga Stadium, located in Khuma township near Stilfontein and Klerksdorp in the City of Matlosana, North West Province.
Premier Mokgosi and Deputy Minister Morolong will be supported by local municipal leaders and other dignitaries.
The Milestones of Freedom campaign commemorates significant milestones in South Africa’s democratic history, including 30 years of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, 60 years since the District Six forced removals and 70 years since the 1956 Women’s March.
Under the theme “Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future,” the campaign seeks to connect South Africa’s history of resistance, sacrifice and struggle with the responsibilities of the present generation, while reflecting on the progress made since the advent of democracy.
The North West launch will highlight the 50th golden jubilee of the 1976 youth uprisings by honouring Mr Mzwandile Mfana Majova and other fallen heroes.
Majova was involved in politics at an early age. He was killed by the apartheid government in 1985 at the age of 27 and buried in a shallow grave. In 1998, under the democratic government his body was exhumed and reburied at his birthplace, Khuma township in Klerksdorp.
This milestone is a reminder of the pivotal role played by the youth in the fight for freedom and democracy.
Since July 2026 todate, the campaign has been launched in the Free State, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Northern Cape and Limpopo.

11h15-11h20: Visit to Majova family home – Khuma township
As part of honoring the legacy of Mzwandile Majova and his contribution to attainment of freedom and democracy, the dignitaries will visit the family of Mzwandile Majova at Khuma township.
12h00-13h00: Wreath laying ceremony and Lighting of the Torch of Peace
The Premier, Deputy Minister and local municipal leadership will proceed to Mfana Majova Freedom Square (also at Khuma) where the Premier and Deputy Minister will lead the wreath laying and lighting of the Torch of Peace. The delegation will also plant freedom trees.
13h00-13h30: Planting of Fruit Trees
The delegation will proceed to Philemon Masinga Sports Complex Hall, Khuma where they will lead the planting of fruit trees to highlight the service delivery element of the campaign.
14h00: Remarks by the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong during an intergenerational dialogue
14h30: Keynote address by North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi
