Erie & Niagara County Legislators Call on Places of Worship to Ring Bells in Remembrance of the 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 Tragedy

Erie County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo and Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres are calling on churches and houses of worship across Erie and Niagara counties to join together in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, by ringing their bells at the exact times the Twin Towers fell.

Churches are being asked to ring their bells once at 9:59 a.m., marking the fall of the South Tower, and once at 10:28 a.m., marking the fall of the North Tower.

“By asking churches in Erie and Niagara counties to participate together, we are creating a simple but meaningful way for our communities to pause, remember and honor the lives that were lost,” Lorigo said. “One bell at 9:59 a.m. One bell at 10:28 a.m. Two moments to remember.”

The two moments will provide an opportunity for communities across Western New York to pause and remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, the first responders who ran toward danger and the countless acts of courage and sacrifice that followed.

“As a history teacher, I know the importance of ensuring the events of the past are carried forward and the lessons we learned are not forgotten,” said Legislator Andres. “Many people do not realize a whole generation has been born since the terrorist attacks, and it’s our job to ensure the stories of sacrifice and heroism of that day do not fade with the passage of time.”

Legislator Lorigo added, “We should never forget September 11, but we should also never forget September 12. In the aftermath of unimaginable tragedy, Americans came together. Political differences gave way to a shared sense of purpose; neighbors helped neighbors, and our country stood united. We were one nation, united by a shared love of country and a determination to stand together. Twenty-five years later, remembering that spirit of American unity is part of honoring those we lost.”

Lorigo and Andres encourage churches and houses of worship throughout Erie and Niagara counties to participate in this shared regional observance.
