Netanyahu Party Confirms Re-Election Bid Amid Political Tensions
The statement came after remarks reported by ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl, who said that US President Donald Trump had expressed uncertainty about Netanyahu’s political future. According to Karl, Trump questioned whether Netanyahu should continue in office and remarked, “He’s had an amazing career. Does he want to continue?” The president also described Netanyahu as “a wartime prime minister” and reportedly stated that “we will very shortly win the war [against Iran] one way or the other.”
In response, Likud issued a brief statement on social media asserting that “Prime Minister Netanyahu will run in the upcoming elections – and with God’s help, he will win.”
Netanyahu, 76, returned to office in late 2022 after previous terms spanning 1996–1999 and 2009–2021. He had earlier indicated his intention to remain politically active in the next electoral cycle. While an exact election date has not been set, Israeli law requires that voting take place no later than October 27. The upcoming election will be the first held since the start of the Gaza conflict triggered by the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent military response.
Public opinion appears divided, with a recent survey by the Israel Democracy Institute indicating that a majority—about 61%—do not support Netanyahu running again. The same proportion also expressed support for imposing term limits on future prime ministers.
Netanyahu, who is currently facing corruption proceedings, has come under intensified criticism from political opponents. Critics argue that his government has not met its stated objectives in ongoing regional conflicts, including the defeat of Hamas in Gaza, the weakening of Hezbollah in Lebanon, and containing Iran, despite repeated claims of progress.
