Israeli Knesset Approves First Reading of Bill to Dissolve Parliament

(MENAFN) Israel’s parliament took a significant step toward a possible early election after lawmakers approved the first reading of a proposal to dissolve the Knesset late Monday.

According to reports, 106 of the chamber’s 120 members backed the measure, while no lawmakers voted against it.

The proposed legislation outlines a possible election period running from Sept. 8 to Oct. 20, as stated by reports.

Reports indicate that the ultra-Orthodox Shas party favors holding elections on Sept. 15, whereas Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party prefers delaying any vote until the current parliamentary term concludes.

Israel had initially planned to hold legislative elections on Oct. 27. However, growing political tensions surrounding the government's inability to approve legislation exempting ultra-Orthodox Jewish citizens from mandatory military service have fueled calls for an earlier election.

Under existing Israeli legislation, the proposal must secure approval in three separate readings before it can officially take effect.
