Pentagon Estimates Iran War Cost Nears USD29B Amid Congressional Scrutiny

(MENAFN) The US Department of Defense says the cost of the ongoing conflict involving Iran has risen to nearly $29 billion, according to testimony presented to Congress, amid growing political scrutiny over the financial and military impact of the war.

Pentagon officials provided the updated estimate during a budget hearing on Capitol Hill, noting that the figure has increased by roughly $4 billion in a short period due to revised calculations covering equipment replacement, operational expenses, and related military costs.

According to reports, Pentagon budget officials told lawmakers that the earlier estimate of approximately $25 billion had been reassessed as internal accounting systems continued to update war-related expenditures.

Senior defense officials, including US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and senior military leadership, were questioned by members of Congress regarding both the total cost and the absence of a comprehensive public breakdown of spending tied to the conflict.

Lawmakers from both parties pressed for greater transparency, with some expressing concern over the long-term financial burden and the strategic objectives of continued US involvement.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump has faced increasing scrutiny as the ceasefire arrangement linked to the conflict has appeared unstable, with officials describing it as fragile and subject to ongoing tensions.

The hearing also highlighted concerns about the strain on US military resources, including the depletion of certain weapons stockpiles due to sustained operational activity in the region.

Pentagon officials, however, downplayed concerns about readiness, stating that assessments of munitions levels and logistical capacity are ongoing and that the military remains capable of sustaining operations.

According to reports, Congress is expected to continue pressing for a more detailed accounting of war-related expenditures as part of upcoming budget negotiations.
