Putin Says Hormuz Crisis Led to Shift in Global Trade Priorities
Speaking via video link at the inaugural International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg, Putin drew a direct line between the US-Israel-Iran confrontation and the accelerating disruption to energy flows through one of the world's most critical maritime corridors.
"Events in Iran directly impact the transportation of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz. More and more countries and companies are considering not only the cost and speed of transportation, but decisive factors are becoming security," he said.
Putin identified a broader set of concerns now surging to the top of the global logistics agenda — including the resilience of transport corridors, the integrity of supply chains, and their relative insulation from armed conflict, geopolitical crises, and other destabilizing external forces.
The forum, which opened Wednesday in Russia's second-largest city, drew a substantial international presence for its first edition. Russia's Ministry of Transport confirmed participation from 73 senior-level delegates representing 50 countries and 13 international organizations, with the program spanning approximately 50 dedicated events.
Discussions at the forum are centered on the future development of the transport and logistics sector across Russia and the broader Eurasian region — a conversation that has taken on renewed strategic urgency as the Hormuz crisis continues to redraw the map of viable global trade routes.
