Macron Urges Dialogue Amid Lebanon Tensions
He highlighted the pressing necessity of avoiding any further escalation, stressing that Lebanon’s stability and territorial unity must be safeguarded.
"I also stressed the urgent need to prevent a further escalation of the conflict in Lebanon, whose stability and territorial integrity must be preserved," Macron said on US social media company X.
He further explained that "France's priority is de-escalation, support for the efforts of the Lebanese government, which has taken strong and courageous decisions to uphold the sovereignty of the Lebanese state, and the preservation of infrastructure and civilian populations, who are the primary victims of this crisis." Macron emphasized backing the Lebanese authorities while protecting civilians and essential facilities affected by the unrest.
Additionally, the French leader pointed to concerns surrounding the safety of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, as tensions continue to rise along the border between Israel and Lebanon.
"Hezbollah made a grave mistake in deciding to attack Israel," he said, while urging wider caution and collective efforts to prevent the situation from worsening further.
Macron also reaffirmed the importance of diplomatic engagement, noting that renewed negotiations could play a crucial role in easing the crisis. "I am convinced that resuming direct talks between Israel and Lebanon is an opportunity that must be seized. France is actively working towards this goal."
He concluded by calling on all sides to refrain from striking vital infrastructure and to return to constructive dialogue, stressing "the absolute necessity for the parties to the conflict to focus on preserving civilian and energy infrastructure, which sustains millions of people."
