Macron Urges Pause on Strikes Targeting Civilian Infrastructure
According to reports, Macron held discussions with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and US President Donald Trump after the incidents, stressing that it was in their "common interest" to introduce an immediate pause in attacks on energy and water infrastructure.
"Civilian populations and their essential needs, as well as the security of energy supplies, must be protected from military escalation," Macron wrote in a post on social media.
The appeal came after reports indicated that an Israeli airstrike hit Iran’s South Pars gas field on Wednesday, forcing two major refineries to suspend operations. In a separate development, QatarEnergy confirmed that a missile strike targeted Ras Laffan Industrial City, the country’s primary hub for liquefied natural gas production.
Reports indicate that the escalation follows ongoing US-Israeli military operations against Iran that began on February 28, which have resulted in approximately 1,300 deaths, including senior figures. Iran has since responded with drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.
