Erdogan Discusses Regional Developments with Trump, EU, Gulf Leaders
In a direct exchange with US President Donald Trump, Erdogan addressed the rapidly deteriorating situation across Iran and the broader Gulf region amid mounting fears of an uncontrollable escalation.
Erdogan extended personal well-wishes to Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani after Qatar came under attack, while also receiving a firsthand briefing on conditions inside the country. The Turkish president similarly offered condolences to UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over strikes that struck their respective territories.
During his exchange with Mohammed bin Salman, Erdogan issued a stark warning — that without decisive international intervention, the escalating hostilities risk triggering severe repercussions for both regional and global security. He emphasized that Türkiye and Saudi Arabia have already invested considerable effort in pursuing dialogue-driven solutions, stressing that diplomacy remains the most viable path forward.
Erdogan also reached out to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, conveying sorrow and solidarity following attacks on Kuwaiti soil.
In a separate call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the Turkish leader reiterated Ankara's firm stance, pressing all involved parties to step back from military confrontation and return to the negotiating table, while offering Turkey's readiness to actively facilitate peace efforts. Erdogan stressed the critical need for tight coordination between Ankara and Brussels throughout the unfolding crisis.
The flashpoint arrived Saturday when the joint US-Israeli military campaign struck Iran, killing several of the country's top officials — among them Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran responded with waves of drone and missile strikes directed at Gulf states. Three US service members have been confirmed dead, with five additional personnel sustaining serious wounds.
