Macron Urges Swift European Action
Speaking to journalists before an informal European Union summit at Alden Biesen Castle in eastern Belgium, Macron emphasized the necessity for immediate steps. "I believe we share this sense of urgency that our Europe must act," he stated.
He pointed out that the bloc is experiencing "mounting pressure," facing "extremely strong" and at times "unfair" competition, "with heavy pressure from China, tariffs imposed on us by the Americans, and threats of coercive practices." These challenges, he suggested, are intensifying the need for a coordinated response.
"All of this calls for a response. The priority is to deliver an immediate, very short-term reaction by implementing everything we already agree on and by moving much faster on simplification, deepening the single market, and addressing energy and financing issues," Macron said, underlining the importance of accelerating existing commitments and reforms.
He further highlighted the importance of continuing Europe’s diversification and risk-reduction strategies by broadening alliances, safeguarding European interests in strategic industries, and investing in innovation.
"What is really important is that we move quickly and take very concrete decisions by June. And in June, we will assess where we stand. On some issues, if we cannot move forward as 27, we should give ourselves the right to pursue enhanced cooperation in order to go faster," Macron added, suggesting that smaller groups of member states could advance more rapidly if unanimous agreement proves unattainable.
