NPC Standing Committee to Convene

(MENAFN) China’s top legislative body, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), is preparing to gather in Beijing on Wednesday, at a time when investigations are unfolding against two senior figures in the country’s armed forces.

An official announcement said the 59th meeting of the Council of Chairpersons of the 14th NPC Standing Committee resolved on Monday to convene the committee’s 20th session in the capital on Feb. 4.

The statement also noted that lawmakers will examine a report submitted by the Credentials Committee concerning the eligibility and status of certain individual deputies.

This review follows a disclosure by China’s Defense Ministry on Jan. 24 that General Zhang Youxia and General Liu Zhenli had become subjects of an inquiry for “suspected serious discipline and law violations.”

It is still unclear whether the upcoming Standing Committee session will directly address decisions related to the future of the two military leaders.

Both officers are part of the seven-member Central Military Commission (CMC) of the Chinese Communist Party, which is chaired by President Xi Jinping.

As a result of the most recent investigation, the commission now has only two active members remaining: Xi himself and Zhang Shengmin, who heads the commission’s disciplinary inspection apparatus.

In recent months, General He Weidong, General Li Shangfu, and Admiral Miao Hua were also investigated and subsequently expelled from the CMC.

Zhang Youxia additionally holds a seat on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and serves as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Liu Zhenli, meanwhile, is a CMC member and occupies the post of chief of staff of the commission’s Joint Staff Department.
