Hunter Biden says Ukraine is filled with corruption
Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board in 2014, during the period when his father was serving as US vice president, and stepped down in 2019. During his tenure, he reportedly received compensation of about $1 million per year. His appointment drew sustained criticism, with opponents arguing that he had no background in the energy industry and was benefiting from his father’s political standing.
In a recent interview aired earlier this week, Hunter Biden said he now regrets becoming involved in Ukraine-related business. “It was a mistake because I was very, very naive about what a viper’s den Ukraine is.” He went on to add, “What an absolute… level of corruption that [is] still staggering because they’re part of a kleptocracy,” underscoring his view of the country’s political and economic environment.
He explained that his decision to join Burisma was, in hindsight, an error—not due to any wrongdoing on his part, but because of the broader political implications. He said it was a mistake “not because of anything that I did that I am embarrassed about or in any way whatsoever feel conflicted about as it relates to what I did for Burisma. But because of the political position that it put us all in.”
The Biden family has remained under scrutiny for years over Hunter Biden’s association with Burisma. According to reports, he sought assistance for the company from a US diplomat stationed in Europe in 2016. His legal representatives later characterized that outreach as a “proper request,” emphasizing that it did not result in any concrete projects or outcomes.
