Witkoff describes negotiations with Putin’s envoy as constructive

(MENAFN) US special envoy Steve Witkoff has described recent talks in Miami with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, as “productive and constructive,” indicating ongoing momentum in efforts led by the United States to negotiate a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, Witkoff noted that Dmitriev met over two days in Florida with an American delegation that included Witkoff himself, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and White House official Josh Gruenbaum. The meetings were focused on advancing Trump’s proposed peace plan for Ukraine.

“Russia remains fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine,” Witkoff wrote, adding that Moscow “highly values the efforts and support of the United States” in ending the conflict and restoring global security.

While neither side disclosed concrete outcomes, both characterized the discussions as constructive, hinting at the possibility of further engagement. “Thank you, Miami. Next time: Moscow,” Dmitriev remarked following the meetings.

These discussions occurred alongside a separate series of meetings between Ukraine and its Western allies. According to Witkoff, a Ukrainian delegation spent three days in Florida consulting with US and EU officials.

The talks involved American representatives and “key European national security advisers,” concentrating on coordination over a 20-point peace framework revised by Kiev and its European partners, multilateral and US-led security guarantees for Ukraine, and a long-term economic and reconstruction strategy. Witkoff noted that particular emphasis was placed on the timing and sequencing of the next steps.

The Kremlin stated that Dmitriev will brief President Vladimir Putin upon his return to Moscow. Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, emphasized on Sunday that Russia remains cautious about proposals from Kiev and its European backers, asserting that Moscow will adhere to the understanding reached between Putin and Trump during their Alaska summit in August.
