Putin's envoy says Russia wants permanent resolution to Ukrainian war

(MENAFN) A top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow is aiming for a permanent resolution to the conflict in Ukraine rather than a short-term ceasefire that could be violated and allow Kiev to rebuild its military capabilities, according to reports.

In an interview on Friday, Kirill Dmitriev, visiting the US for discussions with officials, emphasized that the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine “will have a diplomatic solution.”

His remarks followed the cancellation of a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Putin in Budapest. Trump explained that the meeting “didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get” regarding a settlement, while calling for an immediate halt to fighting along existing front lines. Both leaders indicated the summit could be rescheduled in the future.

Dmitriev stated, “Russia really wants not just a ceasefire, but the final solution to the conflict,” noting that Trump himself had warned that a “ceasefire can always be broken.” He added, “It’s really a temporary solution,” pointing out that such pauses give parties “many people… to do all sorts of rearmament and preparation for continuation of conflict.”

He further noted that Moscow, Washington, and Kiev are “quite close to a diplomatic solution,” highlighting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently shifted his rhetoric, discussing “battle lines” rather than demanding the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from contested areas.

Dmitriev expressed confidence in Trump’s mediation efforts, contrasting them with US President Joe Biden’s approach, and argued that dialogue with Moscow is preferable to attempts at a “strategic defeat of Russia,” which he said had failed.

According to reports, Russia insists that any lasting settlement must address the root causes of the conflict, include guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO, and cover the country’s demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of territorial realities on the ground.
