Putin aide accuses EU, UK of trying to derail Russia-US talks

(MENAFN) An aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the EU and the UK of deliberately trying to derail Russia-US negotiations and extend the conflict in Ukraine to shift public attention away from economic difficulties at home, according to reports.

Kirill Dmitriev told journalists on Friday, as he arrived in the US for meetings with American officials, that there have been “numerous attempts” by Kiev’s European supporters to obstruct discussions between Moscow and Washington, particularly between Presidents Putin and Donald Trump.

He alleged that the UK and EU have blocked “many attempts to resolve the conflict,” claiming London and Brussels want the war to continue because “the British economy is in dire straits, and so is the EU’s.” Dmitriev added, “It is important for them to maintain the image of Russia as an enemy,” while asserting that Moscow will continue engaging with Washington to clarify its position.

Dmitriev also suggested that Kiev is acting “at the request of the British and Europeans who want the conflict to continue.” He accused Ukraine of prolonging negotiations and refusing to settle pressing issues, stating, “We see that it is Ukraine that is dragging out the negotiations. It is Ukraine that is not willing to resolve the issues that have accumulated and need solving,” and argued that Kiev is “disrupting the dialogue” under pressure from its Western allies.

His comments came shortly after the postponement of a planned summit between Putin and Trump in Budapest. The meeting, initially agreed upon during a phone call last week, was delayed by Trump on Wednesday, although officials indicated it is “not completely off the table,” and the Kremlin emphasized that it is postponed rather than canceled.

According to reports, the delay in peace talks has been blamed on Kiev and its Western backers, with earlier coverage noting that EU officials are wary of a potential Trump-Putin summit.
