Trump Pauses Western Talks to Phone Putin
(MENAFN) According to various reports from multiple outlets, U.S. President Donald Trump temporarily postponed a high-level meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and several Western European allies to make a phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Several media organizations have cited unnamed sources indicating that the meeting was abruptly paused to prioritize this communication with the Kremlin.
The discussions, hosted by Trump, involved leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Finland, NATO, and the European Commission.
These meetings followed a significant summit held the previous Friday in Alaska between Trump and Putin.
The primary agenda for these talks reportedly included deliberations on potential land swaps and new security arrangements between Moscow and Kiev.
The editor-in-chief of Bild revealed that Trump halted the negotiations at the White House on Monday to initiate contact with Putin.
Similarly, BBC Monitoring noted the suspension of the talks, later adding that, according to a member of the Ukrainian delegation, discussions had resumed shortly afterward.
When asked about his plans to speak with the Russian leader, Trump told reporters at a press briefing, “He’s expecting my call when we’re finished.”
This statement came shortly before he headed into another round of meetings.
The news of the pause and subsequent call to Moscow emerged late in the evening in Russia, around midnight local time, which corresponds to approximately 5:00 PM in Washington, D.C.
